Silver: Codex VI, a collection of original print works, is currently on display in the Defiance College Women’s Commission Gallery. The exhibit is a portfolio commissioned by Christians in the Visual Arts (CIVA). Twenty-five artists were asked to create works responding to pieces by earlier masters in the collection of the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC. Inspirational works range from Rembrandt, Vermeer, and Bosch, to 20th century artists Edward Hopper, Alexander Calder, and Barnett Newman. The show will run through February 1st.
The dialog between the original works and their contemporary interpreters has produced a rich variety of works, employing traditional intaglio, lithography, serigraph, and block printing, but also including digital and mixed media techniques. The artists have taken themes, compositions, or ideas, and re-interpreted them in timely and timeless ways.
Formed as an organization in 1979 to bring together those interested in the intersection of art and the Christian faith, CIVA has become the premier visual arts organization connecting the artist, the church, and the culture. CIVA’s members include individuals and organizations from a wide variety of denominational affiliations.
The Women’s Commission Gallery is located on the campus of Defiance College, and open from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. on weekdays, or at other times by appointment. For more information, contact Jan Bechtel, Gallery Coordinator, at 419-783-2444.
