Zonta, Defiance College team up for
The Sky Is the Limit

Area high school women have been invited to participate in The Sky Is the Limit, a career education and scholarship event sponsored by Zonta Club of Defiance in collaboration with Defiance College. The second annual event, to be held Sunday, Feb. 24, encourages female students to explore career opportunities in math and science.

”This event shows our strong support for young women in Northwest Ohio to realize that when it comes to dreams, the sky is the limit,” said Joyce Combs, local Zonta member. “Amelia Earhart had a dream, and because of her perseverance she became a pilot. Young women today can pursue their dreams as well.”

Combs noted that there is a need for young women in the U. S. to pursue careers with an emphasis in math and science.  “A strong math or science background will enable young women to select careers in engineering, medical, aerospace, forensic science or education.  These selected careers will enable young women to be competitive in a global employment market,” she said.

The Sky Is the Limit will be held from 2 to 4:30 p.m. in the Serrick Campus Center on the DC campus. Participating young women will be able to compete for one of four $500 scholarships. The scholarship application includes an essay to be written the day of the event. All young women are welcome to attend, however the scholarship competition is limited to juniors and seniors. Scholarships can be used at the college or university of the recipients’ choice.

Participants will learn about careers in math and science as well as participate in fun activities using math and science skills to solve a “mystery” event.

The Sky Is the Limit is free with registration which must be completed online at www.defiance.edu/zonta.html.  Deadline is Feb. 18. Registration is limited to the first 50 persons.

Zonta Club of Defiance is affiliated with Zonta International, a global organization of executives and professionals working together to advance the status of women worldwide through service and advocacy. Zonta members volunteer their time, talents and money to local and international service projects as well as scholarship and award programs aimed at furthering women’s education, leadership and youth development.

Zonta International recognizes aviator Amelia Earhart each year with a variety of projects and events. In addition to her record-breaking achievements in flying, Earhart was a Zontian and women’s rights advocate. Zonta honors her extraordinary achievements and uncompromising spirit and encourages women to follow her example.
