The Defiance College campus, March 26, 2008 - Nationally known Take Back the Night, A Domestic Violence and Rape Awareness program will be coming to the Defiance College campus. Hosted by the Sigma Sigma Sigma sorority, and student led, Take Back the Night is an informative program focused at raising awareness about domestic violence and rape.
The evening’s events will start at 7:00 p.m., and begin with opening remarks from Tierney May, Take Back the Night Committee President and Sigma member. Guest speakers will include Sally King, a local victims’ advocate, and Maggie Maloy, a survivor, advocate, and former Defiance College student.
The assembly will finish at approximately 8:00 p.m., and will lead into a candle-lit march, which will depart at 8:15 p.m. Those who wish to participate in the march will be given a candle and wax catcher. The group will walk down North Clinton to the local VFW, located next to the Defiance Courthouse. The group will carry a banner, donated by DC Student life to identify the progression’s cause.
Finally, a reading will take place of the Women’s Bill of Rights, and a discussion will be opened up about the evening’s events. The event’s focus and how it affected the attendants will be addressed. The evening will wrap up at approximately 9:00 – 9:30 p.m., pending on group interest.
Take Back the Night will be taking place in the Defiance College quad in front of Hubbard Hall (should weather prevent the event from being held outdoors, it will be moved into the Serrick Banquet room). Snacks will be available for attendees along with t-shirts and whistle key chains that will be handed out on a first come, first serve basis. Also, college vans will be available to transport those who attend the march back to the college at the end of the route. Sigma Sigma Sigma would like to thank all those that have helped in the planning of this event and would like to welcome all Defiance College faculty, staff and student body, as well as the Defiance community to attend this event.
