Professor Steve Smith
|
|
Outstanding Service awards were presented to faculty and staff members during the annual Honors Convocation on Sunday.
Selected to receive the faculty award was Professor Steve Smith. He has consistently contributed both on campus and internationally. He has been part of three McMaster School international initiatives, traveling to Chile, Israel/Palestine, and, most recently, Belize. Professor Smith has shared his talents with indigenous artists in all of these locations, as well as with any member of the Defiance community who attends Art Night.
He welcomes the entire campus to his home each fall for the opening of school picnic, and personally throws and fires hundreds of pots to support the annual Empty Bowls Dinner.
He serves as Chair of the Arts and Humanities Division and on the Faculty Review Committee. To show that this individual will truly do anything, he has recently helped a Forensic Science student construct plaster heads for a blood splatter senior capstone project.

The service award for staff was presented to Karen Schroeder who has given 17 years of dedicated service to Defiance College. She has made significant contributions both on campus and beyond. She is committed to making this a health community in all respects.
She has gone well beyond the requirements of her position as Health Care Coordinator, providing educational programming for classes including First-Year Seminar and Natural Science Seminar, advising the student peer education group PULSE, organizing biannual blood drives for the Red Cross, coordinating health programming for the residence halls, and other activities too numerous to count.
Karen is compassionate and caring with students, giving them tremendous support when they are ill, and often serving as first contact for students needing psychological assistance through First Call for Help.
Congratulations, Steve and Karen, and thank you for your outstanding service.
