DEFIANCE, Ohio – Dr. Mark E. Neely, Jr., Professor of History at Penn State University and winner of a Pulitzer Prize for History, will be the next speaker for the Town and Gown Lincoln Series with a presentation on Sunday, Oct.11, at 7:30 p.m. The lecture will be held in Schomburg Auditorium on the campus of Defiance College and is free and open to the public.
Neely will speak on his book The Last Best Hope of Earth, a political biography based on Lincoln’s writings and speeches. An accompanying exhibit to be displayed in the Women’s Commission Gallery will focus on the manner Lincoln has been portrayed in sculpture, featuring a Leo Cherne bust of Lincoln given to Defiance College by President Eisenhower.
The yearlong series is sponsored by Defiance College and the City of Defiance. Additional financial assistance for the lecture and exhibit series is being provided by the Ohio Humanities Council. The next Lincoln Series event scheduled for Oct. 29 originally listed a presentation by Dr. Gerald Wood. Dr. Wood will be unable to appear, and the evening will feature a presentation by Dr. Donald Buerk discussing “Counter Movements”.
