Defiance College to Feature the
Aquatic Art of Michigan Artist Al Jensen

DEFIANCE, Ohio – Pencil studies of fish by Michigan artist Al Jensen will be on display in the Defiance College Women’s Commission Gallery beginning Tuesday, Nov. 10 at 6:00 p.m. and will continue through the month of November. An opening night reception will be held from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, and is free and open to the public.

Jensen holds a bachelor of science degree in biology, and master’s and doctoral degrees in fisheries from Michigan State University.  He has worked as a professional fishery biologist on the reservoirs of the Tennessee Valley Authority in Tennessee, Alabama, and Kentucky; with the Environmental Protection Agency studying fish in the estuaries of Florida; and as a professor teaching and doing research on the dynamics of fish populations in the School of Natural Resources at the University of Michigan for more than 30 years.  He has also published extensively in professional journals on many aspects of fish populations in the Great Lakes area including studies of lake trout, lake whitefish, alewife, walleye, lake herring, chubs, yellow perch, and brook trout.

In the late 1970s, Jensen began to draw fish illustrations with pen and ink.  His designs have been drawn from observations at the University of Michigan Museum of Natural History, from watching fish in aquaria in the lab, at the Toledo Zoo, Shedd Aquarium, Milwaukee Zoo, and more recently, at Cabela’s.  He also uses photographs and studies the work of other illustrators of fish in order to capture accurate detail.

Jensen’s drawings will be complemented by pieces from a collection of vintage fishing equipment owned by Tony Miller of Defiance.  Tony holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in history and education from Defiance College.  He has collected and restored a variety of fishing rods, reels, tackle, advertisements, and other fishing-related pieces.

The Women’s Commission Gallery is located on the Defiance College campus in Dana Hall.  Hours are 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. during the week, and on weekends by appointment.  For more information, contact Gallery Coordinator Jan Bechtel at 419-783-2444, or e-mail jbechtel@defiance.edu.
