Defiance College Presidential Inauguration to
Highlight Homecoming Festivities

DEFIANCE, Ohio –The inauguration of Defiance College’s new president Mark C. Gordon will highlight this year’s Homecoming festivities slated for Oct. 5-11 on the DC campus.

An inauguration ceremony will take place on Thursday, Oct. 8, at 2:30 p.m. in the Weaner Community Center and will include participation from Defiance College students, faculty and staff as well as the local community and delegates from various colleges and universities. The public is welcome to attend.

President Gordon earned a Juris Doctor degree from Harvard Law School, a master’s degree in international affairs with a certificate from the Russian Institute from Columbia University School of International Affairs, and a Bachelor of Arts degree from Columbia College at Columbia University.

Before taking the presidency at Defiance College, Gordon was dean of the University of Detroit Mercy School of Law where he developed and implemented nationally recognized exemplary public service programs, a unique international approach, and curricular innovations focused on success in getting jobs for its students. The school’s enrollment nearly doubled during his tenure as dean.

For six years he was associate professor in the practice of public affairs in the School of International and Public Affairs at Columbia University. Prior to arriving at Columbia, he was general deputy assistant secretary for community planning and development in the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

He assumed the presidency of Defiance College on July 1. He is the eighteenth president in the institution’s 159-year history.

A reception for President Gordon will follow the ceremony, and a community barbecue sponsored by Chief Supermarkets will begin at 5:30 p.m. outside the Weaner Community Center. The barbecue is open to the public and will feature a free will offering with proceeds going toward one-time scholarships for students with minors in autism studies.

The day’s festivities continue with a pep rally at the Justin F. Coressel Stadium at 7 p.m. and fireworks at 7:50 p.m. Both are free and open to the public.

Rounding out the evening will be the choice between two concerts. The Billy Foster Trio will perform a jazz concert at 8:15 p.m. in Schomburg Auditorium. The ’90s pop/rock band Blessid Union of Souls will be performing at the same time in the Weaner Community Center. Individual tickets for either concert are $10 or free with campus ID.

Defiance College, chartered in 1850, is an independent, liberal arts institution in Northwest Ohio offering more than 40 undergraduate majors as well as graduate programs in education and business. Defiance College has received national recognition for its educational experience of engagement. The college website is www.defiance.edu.
