The Women’s Commission Gallery on the campus of Defiance College will open its 2009-10 season with an exhibit of photography by northwest Ohio artist Seder Burns. The exhibit will run from Sept. 23 to Oct. 30, with an opening reception on Wednesday, Sept 23, from 6 to 8 p.m. The reception is free and open to the public.
Based in northwest Ohio, Seder Burns’ primary medium is photography, though he has also worked in printmaking, painting, and interactive art mediums such as the web. He received his M.F.A. in Digital Arts and M.Ed. in Technical Education from Bowling Green State University, and has been teaching courses in digital photography since 1999. He founded the Photography and New Media department within the Toledo Museum of Art’s School of Art where he taught for five years. Burns is currently a visiting assistant professor of new media at the University of Toledo.
The exhibition is titled Three Minutes: Short Adventures in Time and Space, and consists of unique photographs of rural Ohio pastimes taken with a homemade digital camera with a resulting surreal effect. “These are asynchronous photos in which the space and time of the subject change during the exposure,” said Burns. “Rather than presenting a visual illusion of suspended time and place, these photographs strive to be more honest by proclaiming that they are out of sync with time and space.”
The Women’s Commission Gallery is open from 8:00 a.m. through 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, during evening and weekend programs in Schomburg Auditorium, or by appointment. Contact Gallery Coordinator Jan Bechtel at 419-783-2444 for more information.
