DC and St. Mary’s Partner for Fall T-Ruth Academy

DEFIANCE, Ohio – Defiance College’s Division of Teacher Education and St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church have collaborated to support young adolescent girls between the ages of 12-16 in the Defiance area. T-RUTH Academy for Young Adolescent Girls is designed to serve youth in the Defiance community by providing them with opportunities to enhance their reading and writing skills.  This program is for young girls who may be struggling with reading or writing or who just enjoy the art of reading and writing.

Through this program, participants will work within a structured reading/writing program to develop interpersonal and academic skills that will enable and empower them to become productive and caring young girls in their community.  T-RUTH’s overarching theme is to teach reading and writing to young women while engaging them to reach their highest academic potential, guide them toward self-awareness and understanding of others, lead them on a path of discovering their truth, and empower them to build community with humility to serve others.

In this ongoing program, the participants will meet every other Thursday from 5:30 – 7:00 p.m. beginning Thursday, Sept. 17 through Thursday, Nov. 12, at 350 Arabella St., the “Yellow House.”  Each participant will receive the featured book, a diary, and other mystery gifts presented at each session.  They will also participate in career exploration, mentoring, and self-empowerment tea parties.  Light food and beverages will be served. The culminating activity of this program will be the presentation of each participant’s work in the form of a book. 

This program is free and open to the public. Seating is limited!
