DEFIANCE, Ohio – National Non-traditional Student Week is Nov 5-12 and is designated as a time to celebrate the accomplishments and contributions that non-traditional students make to higher education, their communities, and their families. Defiance College’s Center for Adult and Graduate Programs (CAP) will celebrate the week with a variety of events.
The CAP staff will be hosting coffee and treats all week along with two lunches planned for Tuesday and Wednesday. A resume writing workshop will be held on Monday, Nov. 8, taught by Lisa Marsalek, assistant dean of students and director of career development. The CAP program will also kick-off its annual OSU-Michigan food drive during National Non-traditional Student Week. The food drive runs through Nov. 27 and all food collected will be donated to the Family Justice Center.
On Thursday, Nov. 11, the CAP office will celebrate Veterans Day with an open house for the new Veterans Resource Center. The center is a study area designed for the specific needs of students enrolled at Defiance College who are veterans. DC is a member of the Military-Friendly Schools list and participates in the Yellow Ribbon program.
The term “non-traditional student” refers to any adult who enters higher education while maintaining the roles and responsibilities of an adult. At Defiance College, typically that age is 23. Other factors also contribute to being a non-traditional student including full-time employment, being married, being a parent, or being a veteran of a branch of the armed services.
