DEFIANCE, Ohio – The Defiance College and City of Defiance will sponsor a year-long Town and Gown series on the War of 1812. The series titled “The War of 1812 in the Northwest, America’s Second War for Independence” will premiere on Thursday, March 18, and will host noted regional scholars.
The idea for the series originated with Defiance city historian and professor emeritus Randy Buchman.
Presentations will be held in Schomburg Auditorium on the Defiance College campus or the Arts and Media Center located on the corner of Third and Wayne Street. Each presentation will begin at 7:30 p.m. and is free and open to the public.
Following is the year-long schedule:
On March 18, Dr. Donald Buerk, associate professor of history at Defiance College, will present “The Coming of the War” in Schomburg Auditorium.
Professor Emeritus Randy Buchman will present “Northwest Ohio in 1812; The Native American View” on April 15 at the Arts and Media Center.
“Major Muir and 41st Foot” will be presented by Tom Founier, commanding officer and chairman for the 41st Regiment of Foot MLHG, on May 13 in Schomburg Auditorium.
On Sept. 16, Richard Rozevink, Defiance Veterans’ Historical Committee, will present “Winchester’s Camp Three; The Horrible Winter of 1812-13” at the Arts and Media Center.
On Oct. 14, Dr. Larry Nelson, editor of Northwest Ohio History and adjunct assistant professor of history at Bowling Green State University’s Firelands College and Heidelberg University, will present “The Role of Fort Meigs” in Schomburg Auditorium.
Richard Finch, Fort Meigs site manager, will present “Arise, You Sons of Kentucky” on Nov. 4 in Schomburg Auditorium.
Additional financial assistance for the lecture and exhibit series is being provided by the Ohio Humanities Council.
