DEFIANCE, Ohio – Defiance College’s DC Players will present ‘Steel Magnolias’ on April 22 - 24 in Schomburg Auditorium beginning at 8 p.m. nightly.
The cast includes Jerika Hennes, Washington Court House, as Truvy; Morgan Parsons, Indianapolis, Ind., as Annelle; Kellie Raypole, Henrietta, Texas, as Clairee; Andrea Galbraith, Medina, as Shelby; Brittany Heaton, Stow, as M’Lynn; and Brittany Stuper, Ashtabula, as Ouiser.
‘Steel Magnolias’ is set in Truvy’s beauty salon in Chinquapin, La.,, where all the ladies who are “anybody” come to have their hair done. Helped by her eager new assistant, Annelle, the outspoken, wise-cracking Truvy dispenses shampoos and free advice to the town’s rich curmudgeon, Ouiser; an eccentric millionaire, Miss Clairee; and the local social leader, M’Lynn, whose daughter, Shelby, is about to marry a “good ole boy”.
Filled with hilarious repartee and humorously revealing verbal collisions, the play moves towards tragedy when the spunky Shelby risks pregnancy and forfeits her life. The sudden realization of their mortality affects the others, but also draws on the underlying strength – and love – which give this play, and its characters, the special quality to make them truly touching, funny, and marvelously amiable company in good times and bad.
Admission is $5 and reservations can be made by calling Carolyn Gilgenbach at 419-783-2462 or by e-mail at cgilgenbach@defiance.edu
