Annual Honors Convocation
recognizes student achievements

           
DEFIANCE, Ohio – Defiance College held its annual Honors Day Convocation recently to recognize academic achievements of students. Special recognition was also given to faculty and staff.

The Distinguished Faculty Citation
was awarded to Dr. Sue Wajert,Professor of Business Administration and Coordinator of MBA Program.

Outstanding Service Awards for faculty and staff and the Gerald Mallott Outstanding Senior Service Award
were presented to Dr. Sandra Golden,Assistant Professor of Education; Cindy Shaffer, Director of Planned Giving; and graduating senior Rachel Fladd, Groveport.

Dr. Mary Catherine Harper, Associate Professor of English, was appointed to the Kevin McCann Chair in the Humanities.

Alpha Delta Kappa Scholarship in Education – Angela Burklo, Bryan. This award is given to a junior student majoring in education and showing potential as a woman educator.

Arthur Knape Award in Elementary Education
– Grant Barbour, Fremont. Awarded annually to an upper class student majoring in elementary education with at least a 3.7 grade point average. The recipient must show promise and dedication to the teaching profession and demonstrate a desire to become one of the best in the field.

Alton R. Kurtz Prize in Education
– Nathan Cline, Rittman. Awarded to an outstanding education major.

Rothhar Scholarship in Education
– Hilary Opdycke, Fayette. This award is made by the Rothhar family to honor a student in education.

Robert O. Bleeks Assistantship in Sport Science
– Ryan Nusbaum, Burgoon. This award is made in recognition of Bleeks’ understanding of the worth of physical education. Recipient must display characteristics of leadership ability and be a physical education major.

Duane Hocking Scholarship – Krystal Nafziger, Archbold. This award is given to an outstanding sport science student displaying qualities of leadership and involvement both on campus and in the community.

Calista Olds Award for Excellence in Biblical and Religious Studies – Lyndsay Vieira, Defiance, and Aaron Demecs, Defiance. Awarded to an outstanding student in religious studies.

Chemical Rubber Company Award
–Rachael Lange, Berea. This award is given as the top prize in General Chemistry.

George P. Michaelides Award in Religion
– Kimberly Bercaw, Defiance. This award is given in recognition of Dr. Michaelides’ service to students, church and Schauffler College. He was the last president of Schauffler College in Cleveland. Awarded annually to Christian education and social work majors.

George P. Michaelides Scholarship in Social Work
– Julie Brunsman, Cincinnati, and Ashley Plummer, Paulding. Awarded to an outstanding social work student.

Herbert Willett Assistantship in Business Administration – Brett King, Strongsville. Awarded annually to an upper class business or economics major with a 3.0 or better grade point average and provides a combination grant and work opportunity in the business administration department.

E. Keith Hubbard Endowed Scholarship for Graphic Design – John Graves, Leipsic. Awarded annually to a student majoring in graphic design.

George C. Enders Scholar in Religion – Erin Stricklin, Portage, Mich. Awarded to an outstanding student in Christian education or social work.

Public Advocacy Award
– Miles Byrne, Cloverdale. Awarded to a student with exceptional interest in political science.

Ida M. Watson Prize in History
– Shaun Mack, Defiance. Awarded annually to an upper class history student. Given in honor of Ida M. Watson, an alumna of Defiance College who dedicated her life to helping others appreciate American heritage.

William Rollin and Kay Marie Latchaw Prize in Science
– Brittany Coats, Montpelier. Awarded annually to a student majoring in one of the sciences.

Outstanding Senior Student in Psychology
–Tammy DeGryse, Edon. Awarded to a psychology student showing leadership and maturity who is involved with the community. The recipient must have a 3.5 overall grade point average and a 3.6 GPA in psychology.

George L. Boomer Memorial Scholarship
– Lisa Brophy, Saline, Mich. This scholarship was established by Dr. Boomer’s son, Steve, and daughter-in-law, Sue, to serve as a memorial to his work as a physician. It is awarded to a junior majoring in sport science.

Margaret and Michael Stauffer Memorial Scholarship
– Treasure Bacon, Archbold. Awarded to a freshman, sophomore or junior who has made a constructive contribution to the Defiance College communication arts department.

William Edward Pullen Memorial Scholarship – Kelly Coble, Cloverdale. Pullen was a student at Defiance College from 1979-82, majoring in computer science and physics. In 1982, he died of cystic fibrosis. This award is made annually to an outstanding sophomore or junior majoring in mathematics, computer science or physics in memory of Pullen’s work and in recognition of his impact on the lives of others.

Dr. Clarence Gilham Endowed Scholarship – Rebekka Zeigler, New Ringgold, Penn. This scholarship was created by Dr. Gilham to honor the work of Richard Howard, professor emeritus, who served as a member of the Defiance College Christian Education faculty from 1967 to 1990. It is awarded to a full-time undergraduate student preparing to enter Christian ministry or graduate studies in history, or biblical studies.

Defiance Area Chamber of Commerce Business Scholarship
– Charlene Williams, St. Mary, Jamaica. This scholarship is based on academic standing, participation in campus activities, and career goals.

Mathematics Award
– Sarah Buchhop, Napoleon. Awarded to an outstanding student in mathematics.

Reeder C. Hutchinson Assistantship in the Humanities
– Leslie Wilson, Dayton. Awarded to an upperclass student in the humanities, providing a combination of grant and work opportunity.

Linares Assistantship in Science
– Ambrose Krouse, Defiance. Awarded to a student for a natural science work study project and grant assistance.

David and Laura Reed Scholarship – Sarah Tucker, Canastota, NY. Awarded to an outstanding science student.

Samuel V. Tuohy Memorial Scholarship – Alex Thiel, Wauseon. This award was established in memory of Sam Tuohy, a Defiance College student who died in an automobile accident during his senior year. The scholarship is given to a junior or senior student majoring in forensic science.

Arjan Mirchandaney Memorial Scholarship in Mathematics – Daniel Nafziger, Napoleon. Awarded to an outstanding mathematics student, honoring the late Defiance College mathematics professor.

James Frey Memorial Scholarship in Science – Nigel Hogan, Defiance. Awarded to an outstanding science student, honoring the late Defiance College science professor.

George W. Botteron Prize in Chemistry – Bryan Gall, Solon. Awarded to an outstanding sophomore or junior chemistry student, honoring George W. Botteron’s outstanding contributions to the field of chemistry.

Schauffler Alumni Fund Award – Amanda Johnson, Berlin Heights, and Brooke Zachrich, Napoleon. Awarded to an outstanding student in social work.

Schauffler Scholar Award in Christian Education Award – Staci Williams, Cecil. Awarded to an outstanding student majoring in Christian Education.

Honors Certificate in Psychology
– Erica Deutch, Columbus; Elizabeth Dickman, Lima; and Samantha Kahle, Archbold. Awarded to an outstanding psychology student.

George Isaac Business Scholarship – Richard Sherrer, Toledo. This award is made to a student majoring in business who has demonstrated a commitment to the free enterprise system. A good citizenship record is essential.

Herbert S. Beane Scholarship – Matthew Rohlf, Sherwood. Awarded annually to an upperclass student who is highly motivated academically and shows a great deal of respect and thoughtful consideration for faculty and other students. The family of Herbert S. Beane established this scholarship in honor of his 80th birthday. A long-time attorney, Beane came to Defiance College in 1918 as a 16-year-old freshman.

Social Work Leadership Award
– Stacey Bosserman, Goshen. Awarded to an outstanding senior majoring in social work.

Outstanding Senior in Accounting
– Sydney Erickson, Defiance. Awarded to an outstanding senior majoring in accounting.

Outstanding Senior in Managemen
t – Grant Phillips, Defiance. Awarded to an outstanding traditional senior majoring in management.

Outstanding Senior in Marketing
