DEFIANCE, Ohio - Defiance College hosted its first Collegiate Relay for Life on campus recently, raising approximately $1,300. There were more than 60 participants in the student-run event
A significant amount of the funds raised at the event will remain in the area and benefit local cancer-relief endeavors, including the Road to Recovery and the Reach to Recovery programs. The Road to Recovery program steps in when cancer patients do not have access to adequate transportation to treatment appointments. The Reach to Recovery program provides support to individuals met with the potential of developing or has developed breast cancer. Volunteers, who are survivors of breast cancer themselves, extend support and encouragement to patients and family members during every phase of their breast cancer experience.
Themed “Scream for a Dream,” the DC Relay encouraged participants to wear a costume. For twelve hours, starting at noon and finishing at midnight, the event was full of activities including a corn hole tournament, a pumpkin carving contest, apple bobbing, a runway costume contest, Fear Factor game and a Minute-to-Win-it game.
The Survivor’s Lap is the traditional kick-off at every Relay for Life, and DC’s Relay was no different. The evening also included the two other integral Relay for Life traditions – the Luminaria Service and the Closing Ceremony. The Luminaria Service is held in honor of those who have been touched by cancer and those who have lost their lives during their battle with cancer. Inside bags filled with sand, candles are illuminated, with each bag bearing the name of someone who has experienced or been lost to cancer. It is during the Closing Ceremony that the participants personally dedicate themselves to the cause of fighting cancer.
