"Fall From Grace" by Jim Fultz
DEFIANCE, Ohio - The Defiance College Women’s Commission Gallery is currently hosting an exhibit of works by Jim Fultz, adjunct faculty at Bluffton University and Owens Community College. The exhibit will run through Friday, Nov. 4, with a closing reception held that afternoon from 4 to 6 p.m.
Fultz has a BFA in studio art from the University of Akron and an MFA in painting from Ohio University with a secondary emphasis in philosophy. He spent 10 years in New York City where he worked in the education department of the Guggenheim Museum and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. He also taught art in the NYC public school system to junior high students. Returning to Ohio, he worked in Cleveland for several years as a graphic designer, professional mural painter and sculptor for a prototype model-making studio.
Fultz writes of his work, “All of my recent work comes from an idea, or a set of ideas about the landscape. Not in the Romantic or classical sense of a ‘lost Paradise’ but in the sense of nature as a mindless, unsympathetic force, the antithesis of all that makes us human. Doubt and uncertainty are, for me, inspirations. As strange as this may sound, not knowing where one is going, being lost, reveals the greatest possible faith and optimism, as opposed to collective security and collective significance. Uncertainty as landscape.”
Fultz has exhibited his artwork both locally and nationally in various galleries and museums.
The Defiance College Women’s Commission Gallery is located in Dana Hall, next to Schomburg Auditorium. Gallery hours are 8 a.m. until 8 p.m. Monday through Friday, or by appointment. For more information, contact gallery coordinator Jan Bechtel at 419-783-2444.
