DEFIANCE, Ohio – Defiance College Alumni Varsity D will present its annual Coach of the Year and Honorary Letterman awards during an event on Saturday, Jan. 22.
Timothy Held, Cincinnati Moeller High School varsity baseball coach; Bradley Myers, Wauseon High School women’s basketball coach; and Daniel Salinas, Pickerington High School North varsity wrestling assistant coach, will receive Coach of the Year honors, and Dennis “Scotty” Scott will be recognized as Honorary Letterman for 2011.
Recognition ceremonies will be held in the Weaner Community Center postgame of the 1 p.m. Yellow Jackets women’s basketball game.
Held’s team at Cincinnati Moeller High School was 29-2 for the season. They finished first in the Greater Catholic League Championship and competed in the Division I State tournament, making it to the final four. Held was named State of Ohio Coach of the Year and Greater Catholic League Coach of the Year.
Held is a 1996 graduate of DC and played varsity baseball from 1993-1995. He and his wife, Leslie, have two children and reside in Cincinnati.
Coach Myers’ Wauseon High School Lady Indians went 21-4 overall and 8-0 in the Northwest Ohio Athletic League. They earned both the NWOAL championship and the district championship.
Coach Myers, a 1986 graduate, was recognized as the NWOAL Coach of the Year and District 7 Coach of the Year. He and his wife, Becky, have three children and reside in Wauseon.
As assistant coach of the varsity wrestling team at Pickerington High School North, Daniel Salinas helped the Panthers earn the OCC Team Championship and sectional championship during the 2009/2010 season. The Pickerington North wrestling team went on to place third in the district and 11th in the state. Six Pickerington North wrestlers qualified to compete individually in state competition, with three placers.
Salinas is a 1997 DC grad and resides in Pickerington with his wife, Julia, and their two children.
The Honorary Letterman Award recognizes individuals for their continued commitment and unselfish service to Defiance College athletics.
Scotty is the owner and operator of a favorite local restaurant, Scotty’s 111. Not only he is a true supporter of Defiance College with his time, talent and resources, he extends his generosity to many other local institutions. Scotty is a current member and a past president of the Defiance College Purple and Gold Club
The Alumni Varsity 'D' is an organization created to promote athletics at Defiance College. Membership in the Alumni Varsity 'D' is open to any former student who earned one or more athletic letters in any sport at Defiance College. Former athletes have helped continue the rich tradition of intercollegiate athletics by providing financial support to the many DC athletic programs through membership donations and fundraisers. Alumni Varsity D represents 1,200 student athletes who earned varsity letters at Defiance College.
