READ@DC helps students with
Reading and Writing Skills

DEFIANCE, Ohio – Defiance College has announced a new Reading Engagement and Development Center at DC (READ@DC), a Project 701 initiative. Developed to support students in grades K-12, the center will assist students struggling in reading and writing.

"The reading and writing center is a great opportunity to serve our community and also give our students another opportunity to polish their knowledge and skills as future teachers,” said Dr. Sandra Golden, assistant professor of education and director of graduate education programs. “Both skills are critical to academic success, and through our center we want to provide students struggling in reading and writing with the best tutoring services that are both engaging and fun."

READ@DC will provide assessment/diagnosis services; remediation in reading and writing; and tutoring in reading and writing by DC trained pre-service teachers. This summer program will be open June 11 through August 15 with tutoring sessions by appointment only. Cost for services is based on a sliding scale.

READ@DC assistant manager Katie Weber said of the program, "All of our tutors are majoring in education and have been trained to tutor by Dr. Golden.  We are excited to work with the students this summer and help them develop an understanding and enjoyment of reading and writing."

To make an appointment or for more information, contact Robyn Corron at 419-956-1641 or rcorron001@defiance.edu or Katie Weber at 419-438-1299 or kweber002@defiance.edu. The faculty advisor for this program is Dr. Golden, and she can be contacted at 419-783-2412 or sgolden@defiance.edu.

The Reading Engagement and Development Center at DC operates as part of Project 701, a separate legal nonprofit, incorporated under the laws of the State of Ohio and run and managed by Defiance College students. The organization incorporates the strengths of various academic disciplines in order to develop innovative strategies to address community needs. It also provides entrepreneurial training and experience that will enable students to even more effectively use the skills and knowledge they learn in the classroom.

Other Project 701 initiatives include: Back Pack Buddies, DCPC Solutions, DC Recycling, DC Artbox Fair Trade, Creating Defiance, Defiance Cares Free Health Clinic, Hench Herb Project, Micro-lending in Jamaica, Dance Marathon and the Native Garden.

Defiance College, chartered in 1850, is an independent, liberal arts institution in Northwest Ohio offering more than 40 undergraduate programs of study as well as graduate programs in education and business. Defiance College has received national recognition for its educational experience of service and engagement. The college website is www.defiance.edu.
