"Keep the customer happy."
This stock business truth begins long before the customer walks in the door and continues after the customer walks out.
The marketing program at Defiance College understands that customers' desires and values form the basis for a productive and ongoing business relationship. Those who add a marketing minor are equipped with the skills and competencies required to understand, create, and maintain mutually beneficial exchanges between organizations and their customers.
In addition to gaining a strong general business foundation, students work closely with professors to obtain valuable skills in a variety of areas from market research to e-commerce, retail management to advertising. DC’s business faculty members strive to prepare their graduates to think creatively about business problems, make sound business decisions, and work successfully in the business world.
A minor in marketing provides relevant courses to students whose majors are in another department, such as business administration, criminal justice, social work, communication studies, religious studies, sport management, etc., and anyone who wants to learn the fundamentals of the marketing discipline. The program offers courses in professional selling, retail management, and advertising, among others. Students graduating with a minor in marketing are well prepared for careers in retail management, advertising, sales, and promotion. Students with a minor often work in a marketing capacity for their internships.
Benefits of the Program
Small classroom sizes allow students to engage actively with faculty and establish strong, positive relationships as faculty support students to succeed in their education and career. Through the McMaster School, students have the opportunity to travel to another part of the world and complete a project of their own design, thereby growing their skills in identifying issues and problem-solving while nurturing a broad perspective.
Students pursuing a marketing minor have opportunities to gain practical experience and test their knowledge and skills on a national level through challenges and competitions such as the Collegiate Echo Marketing Challenge.
The Business Advantage Program is a student-led organization dedicated to “bringing
textbooks to life” on DC’s campus. Students discover a retail or service-oriented
business concept, develop plans to create the business including advertising and marketing
of the concept, human resources, accounting, finance, business communication, and
quantitative business analysis, and execute the day-to-day operations.

"While I have only begun to immerse myself into the core marketing classes at Defiance
College, I am already beginning to view commercials and advertising media from a different
perspective. The professors' lectures, class discussions, research papers, and assigned
presentations have really molded my analytical skills and developed my communication
skills, among other aptitudes. I am confident I will be successful because of these
skills I continue to acquire and practice in the classroom."

"My experience at Defiance College has been very rewarding. The flexibility of the
classes has allowed me to attend Defiance College while working a full-time job as
a co-manager at Bath & Body Works. Family is very important to me, and balancing family,
work, and college has been a challenge. However, Defiance College has made this possible.
The professors are extremely helpful and always willing to accommodate me in any way
they can. I find it very beneficial that I can talk with the professors, and they
know my name, and are more than willing to accommodate me if I have family functions
or work-related meetings to attend. The business and marketing programs have really
encouraged me to think, not only locally, but globally. Everyone at the college is
very personable, and I have met a lot of new friends. I am very excited to see what
opportunities lay ahead of me after graduation."
--Dawn M. Hoellrich, Marketing Minor
"When I first came to Defiance College, I knew there were many things I wanted to

my true actualization was realizing what I was meant to accomplish. Defiance College
helped me realize my potential and focus my future."
