The Office of Nontraditional Student Support (NontradSS) focuses on the needs of the nontraditional student population at Defiance College. Nontraditional students are those who are not following the more traditional route of attending college full-time immediately after high school until finishing their degree requirements. Nontraditional students are frequently individuals who require that their courses be scheduled with jobs and family responsibilities in mind. For these reasons, nontraditional students find that our offering of day, evening, and weekend classes provides a schedule that fits into their other responsibilities.
The NontradSS Office provides a range of services to help make your experience at DC as positive as possible.
Extended Office Hours
We offer day, evening, and weekend office hours. Additional hours can be scheduled upon request. Appointments are best in order to maximize your time but you are welcome to just stop in.
Each semester we schedule an orientation for nontraditional students who are beginning their academic study at DC. We can also schedule a one-on-one orientation with you.
Your primary advisor is a full-time faculty member in your major. If you wish to change advisors, you can make the request in the Registrar’s Office. Your faculty advisor should always be your primary contact for planning your course schedule and questions about the major. However, the NontradSS Office can serve as your secondary advisor if you are an undergraduate student.
The NontradSS Office can also provide you with assistance about all other aspects of being a student at Defiance College. Our offices of Registrar, Financial Aid, Business, and Student Life are primary contacts for you and available to assist in person or by phone during the day or email any time. The NontradSS Office can be a secondary contact for your questions involving these offices.
The Office of NontradSS distributes a bi-weekly electronic newsletter, The Buzz. A link to the newsletter is delivered to your college email account giving you up-to-date and important information.
Veterans Resource Center
We appreciate the service and sacrifice our U.S. military veterans have made for all of us. The Veterans Resource Center is available for military veterans to use while they are enrolled in classes at Defiance College. The Center is located in Defiance Hall and is equipped with computers, a printer, and other resources.
A number of special events are held each year just for nontraditional students. Information is sent out through The Buzz electronic newsletter and direct email.
NontradSS Book Scholarship
Applications for the NontradSS Book Scholarship are available in the office. This competitive scholarship is awarded each semester depending on available funds. A student must have successfully completed at least one semester at DC in order to apply. Both part-time and full-time students can apply. Students must apply each semester they wish to be considered and can receive assistance more than once.
The Admissions Office offers information online about DC, majors, scheduling a visit, admissions criteria, transferring to DC, and applying online. You will also find a campus map, directions to campus, tuition and fees, and financial aid applications and forms. You may begin your course work in fall, spring, or summer terms.
