DEFIANCE, Ohio Defiance College has announced that Tom Jarman has accepted an invitation to be the guest speaker at the 35th-Annual Purple & Gold Banquet. The event is scheduled for Sunday, April 27 at 6:00 pm and will be held in the Karl H. Weaner Community Center.
Tom Jarman served as the Athletics Director at Manchester College from 1989 through 2007. During his 18 years of service, Jarman developed an athletic program at Manchester that emphasized a strong commitment to the academic and athletic successes of its student-athletes. Jarman also served as the head wrestling coach and associate professor of health and physical education for Manchester during his stay with the Spartans.
A graduate of Wheaton College in 1965, Jarman was a two-sport athlete in wrestling and football. He was an NCAA National Champion in 1963 as a 158-pounder, and earned All-American honors in 1963 and 1965. | of physical education until 1967. In 1969, Jarman took the head wrestling coach position at Taylor University and was an assistant football coach and physical education instructor over a ten-year period. In 1979, he was the head wrestling coach at Northwestern University for another ten-year stint, before taking the position at Manchester.
Jarman has been recognized by several Hall of Fame committees for his outstanding contribution to the sport of wrestling. He is a member of the Taylor University, Wheaton College, Oswego High School, Indiana Wrestling Coaches and the Illinois Wrestling Coaches Hall of Fame, and most recently the NCAA Division III Wrestling Coaches Hall of Fame. He co-authored a book entitled Wrestling for Beginners, which remains one of the all-time top-selling books for young wrestlers. He coached seventeen All-American finishes, along with seventeen Academic All-Americans in his tenure as head coach at Manchester and has posted an overall record of 414-144-1, including a 179-48 mark at Manchester. Jarman continues his involvement with the sport as a member of the coaching staff for the United State’s Olympic Wrestling team.
Jarman guided Manchester to eight consecutive Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference championships, spanning from 1992-1999, and again in 2002, 2003, 2004 and again in 2007. He was a seven-time HCAC Conference Coach of the Year and was named NCAA Midwest Regional Coach of the Year four times while at Manchester.
