Jackets swept by Spartans

DEFIANCE, Ohio—The Defiance College baseball team dropped the series finale to #11 Manchester College, 3-9, at Rutter Field on Saturday afternoon.

The Spartans smacked 19 hits and took advantage of three Jacket errors, while DC had 12 hits of their own, led by Eric Schwab at 3-for-5 with an RBI and Jeremy Vance, who went 2-for-4 with a triple and a double, scoring a run and driving in one.

Starter Cory Bergfeld and Derek Hanson split the pitching duties for Defiance, with Bergfeld going four innings with two strike outs and six earned runs on 10 hits allowed. Hanson went five innings and allowed one earned run on nine hits with four Ks.

Lenny Koesters and James Yenser each went 2-for-5 with a run and RBI, respectively, while Jeremy Hawkins and Jordan Wack each added a single for the Jackets.

Defiance is now 11-17 on the year with a 4-8 mark in the Heartland Conference. Manchester is now 23-5 and 12-0 in the league.

The Jackets will host Grace College on Tuesday at 4:00 p.m. before traveling to Mount St. Joseph for a three-game series on Friday and Saturday.
