Jackets swept by Lions

AMELIA, Ohio—The Defiance College Yellow Jackets were swept by the Lions of Mount St. Joseph, falling in both ends of Saturday’s doubleheader, 6-7 and 6-9 at Midland Field.

Game one saw the Jackets in the lead, 6-3, going into the bottom of the seventh inning. The Lions claimed the win with three singles, scoring four runs. R.J. Chidester and David Jackson were each 2-for-3 with an RBI each. Jeremy Vance drove in two runs and scored one in a 2-for-4 game-one performance. Jake Reckner got the loss for DC, while starter Tyler Stork went six innings and gave up just three earned runs on five hits. Dustin Zizelman faced the final three batters of game one.

In game two, Jackson again led the Jacket offense, with a solo-homerun in the fourth after singling and scoring in the second. Jackson finished game two 2-for-2. Starter James Yenser was roughed up on the mound for the first time this season, giving up seven earned-runs on eight hits in 4.1 innings. Nicholas Picciano and Cory Bergfeld each saw action in relief. Yenser went to centerfield after pitching and smacked an RBI double in the sixth inning to tie the game before the Lions plated four runs in the bottom of the sixth.

Tim Yenser also had an RBI double in game two, while Jeremy Hawkins was 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run.

The Jackets are now 12-20 overall and 4-11 in the Heartland Conference. They will next play at Ohio Northern on Tuesday with first pitch scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
