Defiance takes series from Franklin

DEFIANCE, Ohio—The Defiance College Yellow Jackets took the series from Franklin College, splitting Saturday’s doubleheader at Rutter Field, 1-4 and 3-0.

In game two’s win, James Yenser went all seven innings on the mound, striking out six batters and scattering three hits. Eric Tipton was 2-for-3 in game two with two RBI, while Eric Schwab and Lenny Koesters were both 1-for-3 with a run.

The fourth and fifth innings were big for DC, with Schwab scoring the game’s first run on a Franklin error in the fourth, while Tipton plated two on a single in the bottom of the fifth.

Cory Bergfeld got game one’s loss on the mound, going four innings and allowing two earned runs on six hits with one walk. Derek Hanson went the final three innings, striking out one batter with four hits and one earned run. Tim Yenser accounted for DC’s only run on a solo-home run in the bottom of the fifth.

Defiance is now 14-21 on the year and 6-12 in the Heartland Conference, while Franklin is 19-17 and 7-11 in the league.

The Jackets will next travel to Division-I IPFW on Sunday for a 2:00 p.m. game.
