Yellow Jackets split with Ravens on Senior Day
DEFIANCE, OhioThe Defiance College baseball team won game one over Anderson University, 1-0, before falling in game two, 0-8, to the visiting Ravens at Rutter Field on Friday afternoon.
In the first contest of an unusual Friday doubleheader, the Ravens were sat down by an overpowering performance from DC junior right-hander Tyler Stork. The Paulding native struck out six, while allowing no runs and scattering three hits. Stork retired 22 of 26 batters. The Jackets got the only run they needed after a double down the left field line by freshman Jeremey Fruhwirth. Junior Eric Tipton later single to score Eric Schwab, Fruhwirth’s pinch-runner.
In game two, freshman Derek Hanson took the mound, going five innings and striking out six, while allowing seven earned runs on 12 hits. Sophomore Mike Hill pitched the final two innings and struck out four of seven batters faced, not allowing a run. The Ravens scored one run in both the first and second inning before crossing three in the third and fifth innings.
Seniors Richard Trick, Cris Newcomb, Mike Mirabelli, Matt Tycast and Greg Harper were honored after game two for their accomplishments in their DC Baseball careers.
The Jackets will travel to Anderson tomorrow (5-7) for the final game of the 2005 season with first pitch scheduled for 10:00 a.m. (CST).
