Jackets shut out by Lions

DEFIANCE, Ohio—The Defiance College Baseball squad fell in two shut-out losses to the Mount St. Joseph Lions on Saturday afternoon at Rutter Field.

The second game saw the Jackets completely shut down by Lions’ pitcher Zach Grove who recorded a no-hitter and allowed just one base runner on an error in the first inning. A great outing by DC freshman Derek Hanson (1-2) was lost as the Wauseon native allowed just one earned run on five hits, striking out three and retiring 17 batters.

Game one’s 0-2 loss saw the Jackets get several runners into scoring position. However the DC bats could not get them in, stranding six runners. Junior Tyler Stork (4-4) had another tough-luck loss as the Paulding product allowed two earned runs on seven hits, with three Ks.

Mike Hill went 2-for-2 in game one, singling in the third and fifth innings.

The Jackets fall to 9-21 on the season and 6-10 in the Heartland Conference. DC will face Anderson in the HCAC and regular season’s final series next weekend. The Jackets will host the Ravens on Friday with first pitch scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
