GREENWOOD, Ind. Yellow Jacket return specialist, Gary Allen, scored the lone Defiance touchdown in a 13-10 road victory over Rose-Hulman on Saturday and was named as the HCAC Special Teams Player of the Week on Monday morning.
Allen had only three returns in the game but still managed to leave his mark with 102 return yards on two kickoffs and one 10-yard punt return. The big play came late in the second quarter after Rose-Hulman had just completed an eight-play, 83 yard touchdown march to grab control of the game at 7-3 with just over three minutes to play in the opening half. Allen took the ensuing Engineer kickoff and silenced the large Rose-Hulman homecoming crowd by sprinting 90 yards to pay dirt and a 10-7 DC lead.
The Jackets took the three point lead to the half and made it stand over the final two quarters en route to earning a hard fought 13-10 victory.
The honor is the first of the season for Allen and marks the fourth such award for a Yellow Jacket this season. This also marks the second-straight week that a Defiance player has been named as the Special Teams Player of the Week with Hans Vetter taking the honors for his efforts in DC’s 19-7 road win over Manchester on Sep. 30.
Allen and the Jackets will return to Coressel Stadium this Saturday, Oct. 14 in search of their fifth-straight victory when they host Anderson University at 1:30 pm. The contest will highlight DC’s 2006 homecoming festivities on Saturday.
