DEFIANCE, Ohio Defensive players Nic Cass and Tyler Haines were each named Football Gazette Honorable Mention All-North Region on Wednesday as announced by Don Hansen’s National Weekly Football Gazette.
Cass, a junior corner back, adds the honor to a list that also includes being tabbed as a Second-Team All-North Region selection by D3Football.com and First-Team All-Heartland Conference for his efforts during the 2006 campaign.
The Roseville, Mich., native helped to anchor the Yellow Jackets’ secondary all season by recording 27 of his 42 tackles via the solo variety. Cass led the HCAC with five interceptions and was second in the conference with 12 pass breakups, while ranking 40th and 52nd nationally in those statistics.
Haines was also honored by the Football Gazette after posting 54 tackles, 15 hits for lost yardage, 5.5 sacks, two picks and one fumble recovery from his linebacker position.
The Piqua, Ohio, native ended the season ranking third in the HCAC in tackles for lost yardage and sixth in sacks and was named First-Team All-HCAC after previously earning a spot on the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District IV Team.
Defiance ended a very successful 2006 campaign with a 7-3 record and won five of seven HCAC contests. The Yellow Jackets will begin their 2007 slate on Sep. 1 when they play at Otterbein.
