Tietje Grabs HCAC Defensive Player of the Week Honor

GREENWOOD, Ind. – Defiance College junior linebacker Chris Tietje was selected as the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Co-Defensive Player of the Week as announced by the conference office on Monday afternoon.

Tietje piled up a game-high 14 tackles with 11 coming via the solo variety and added 6.5 stops for lost yardage including one 12-yard sack. The junior linebacker anchored a stout Defiance defense which limited MSJ to just 104 total yards and 1.8 yards per play. The Mount’s standout running back, Mike Lovell, managed 106 rushing yards on 32 carries but the Jackets held the rest of the Mount St. Joseph squad to negative two yards over 27 plays from scrimmage.

The Deshler, Ohio, native was the top performer among several impressive showings from the Purple and Gold’s starting linebacker unit. Tietje combined with Tyler Haines, Ruben Echezabal and Steven Brancheau to total 41 tackles, 12.0 for lost yardage totaling 40 yards and one sack.

The 14 total tackles, 11 solo tackles and 6.5 hits for lost yardage were all season highs for Tietje and the 14 stops and 6.5 tackles for loss also marked the best single-game performance in those categories for any Yellow Jacket player this season.

Tietje is currently second on the Defiance roster with 51 total tackles wile topping the squad with 34 solo stops and ranking third with 10.5 hits for lost yardage.

With the award, Tietje joins fellow Yellow Jackets Gary Allen, Nic Cass, Luke Dillon, Tyler Haines, Keith Snyder and Hans Vetter as the seventh different Defiance player to earn a weekly honor from the HCAC during the 2006 season.

Defiance (6-2, 4-1 HCAC) will host Franklin College (7-1, 4-1 HCAC) on Saturday at 1:00 pm in a battle for sole-possession of second place in the conference. The contest will also mark the final home game of the year for DC. This year’s group of seniors will be recognized prior to the start of Saturday’s game.
