Anderson at Defiance Box Score
DEFIANCE, Ohio Scooter Curtis broke off a 60-yard touchdown run on the second possession of the game for Defiance and the Jackets never looked back en route to a 45-13 drubbing of Anderson on Saturday inside Coressel Stadium.
The win capped a day of Homecoming festivities for Defiance College and also gave the Purple and Gold its first five-game win streak since getting off to a 7-0 start during its 2001 HCAC Championship season. The 45 points also mark the most by a DC football team in over 12 years and the 32-point spread is the largest margin of victory for Defiance since taking a 42-0 win over Rockford College on Sep. 22 of 2001.
With the score 7-0 in favor of the Jackets, Anderson capitalized on a DC miscue to knot the score at 7-7. Hans Vetter fumbled an attempted half-back toss and AU’s Jimmy Pharis scooped up the loose ball and returned it 10 yards to the end zone.
It was all DC from that point on however, as Vetter connected with Luke Dillon for three consecutive touchdown passes and Jason Gendron pounded in a five-yard touchdown run to give the Jackets a 35-7 lead midway through the third quarter.
Anderson finally managed to break the streak of 28 unanswered points from Defiance when Terry Perky ripped off a 33-yard touchdown sprint. Anderson had to settle for six points as its extra-point attempt was blocked by Keith Snyder.
Defiance held the Ravens scoreless over the final 21:07 and its lead eventually swelled to the final margin of 45-13 behind a 27-yard field goal from Dan Brown and the second touchdown run of the day for Curtis.
DC had everything working all afternoon as the offense piled up 21 first downs and 388 total yards. The Jackets also converted on seven-of-12 third downs and made good on their lone fourth-down attempt of the contest.
Vetter turned in his best effort of the season by completing 14-of-21 passes for 187 yards and a trio of touchdowns.
Dillon was on the receiving end of those three touchdown passes from Vetter and totaled 123 yards on six catches, including a 43-yard catch that set up DC’s fifth score of the day. Ricky Calverley hauled in five passes for 47 yards and Gary Allen had three catches for 41 yards.
Curtis led the way for a rushing attack which racked up 171 yards on 40 attempts by running for 122 yards on 14 carries and a pair of touchdowns. Gendron was also solid, averaging 5.4 yards a touch en route to 70 yards and a score.
Snyder led the way for the Yellow Jacket defense with a game-high eight tackles. Snyder also earned one tackle for negative yardage and blocked an extra-point try from AU. DC had great penetration throughout and collected five sacks, three pass breakups, two fumble recoveries and one interception as a unit.
Defiance has now allowed one offensive touchdown or less in each of the past five weeks. During that time, DC has gone 5-0 while outscoring the opposition by a 104-40 margin.
The Yellow Jackets (5-1, 3-0) are now one of only two unbeaten teams remaining in HCAC play, joining No. 18 MSJ (6-0, 4-0 HCAC) atop the conference standings.
Defiance will play at Hanover (2-4, 2-1 HCAC) next Saturday at 1:30 pm before returning home to host Mt. St. Joseph (Oct. 28) and Franklin (Nov. 4).
