Yellow Jackets Win Second In a Row

--CLEVELAND, Ohio-- The Defiance College Football team beat the host Case Western Reserve University Spartans 14-13 in Cleveland, Ohio on Saturday for their second win of the season.

Defiance was down early as the Spartans jumped out to a 7-0 lead eight minutes into the first quarter. The Yellow Jackets could not get things going offensively as they came away scoreless on their next two drives. To make matters worse, sophomore quarterback Nate Fitton (Grand Ledge, Mich. - Potterville) was injured on DC's first play from scrimmage in the second quarter. Freshman quarterback Hans Vetter (Toledo, Ohio - Springfield) stepped into the game on the Defiance 32, but was unable to advance the team downfield as the Jackets went three-and-out. Yet on the next drive, the Jackets marched down the field, as Vetter capped off a 13-play, 80-yard drive with a one yard touchdown run.

After a three-and-out for Case Western, the Jackets started their drive on the Defiance 46. On the fifth play of the drive, Vetter launched a 41-yard touchdown pass to sophomore Luke Dillon (Temperance, Mich. - Missouri Military). Defiance led the rest of the game, though Case Western made things close when the Spartans scored on a three-yard pass to Matt Skolnicki with four minutes left in the fourth quarter. However, the Yellow Jackets were able to breathe a sigh of relief when Case Western missed the extra point and DC was able to hold on for the win.

Vetter finished the game 4-for-12 passing for 87 yards with a touchdown pass and an interception, in addition to a touchdown run. Fitton threw for 36 yards on 2-for-5 passing. Dillion led the Jackets in receiving with five catches for 115 yards and a TD reception. Sophomore Jake Shank (Northwood, Ohio - Cardinal Stritch) rushed for 44 yards on 10 carries.

On defense, senior Kris Zajac (Grosse Ile, Mich. - Grosse Ile) had a big game with eight tackles, including two tackles for loss and two sacks. Zac Fullmer also added five tackles, two of which were sacks. Junior Mike Haydon (Allen Park, Mich - Allen Park) and junior Stu Gliwa (East Lansing, Mich. - Haslett) also added a sack apiece.

On special teams, sophomore Gary Allen (Richland, Mich. - Gull Lake) returned two punts for 22 yards and three kicks for 40 yards. Senior Blake Stambaugh (Swanton, Ohio - Swanton) punted four balls for a 39.8-yard average.

Defiance is now 2-2 on the year. The Jackets next travel to Indiana to take on Anderson University at 1:30 p.m. The Spartans drop to 3-2 overall.
