GREENWOOD, Ind. Tyler Haines and Hans Vetter were honored by the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference on Monday. The HCAC tabbed Haines as the Defensive Player of the Week and named Vetter the Special Teams Player of the Week for their efforts in DC’s 19-7 win at Manchester on Sep. 30.
Haines and Vetter join Keith Snyder as the three Yellow Jackets to be named as Players of the Week in the HCAC in the first four weeks of action in the 2006 season.
Haines was honored for his efforts on the defensive side of the ball as he anchored a Yellow Jacket defensive unit which held the Spartans under 70 yards of total offense through three full quarters and 146 for the entire game. DC kept the Spartans out of the red zone and off the scoreboard until Manchester’s final drive of the game. Haines led the team with six tackles while picking off a pass and recording one sack.
Haines is currently second on the Jackets with 21 tackles and third with a pair of sacks along with 5.5 hits for negative yardage. Haines is also among a group of four DC players to have pulled down two interceptions this season.
So far this season, the DC defense ranks in the top 50 in the nation in numerous statistical categories. The Jackets are 21st in total defense (210.8 yards per game), 25th in scoring defense (10.5 points allowed per game), 36th in rushing defense (72.8 yards per game) and 47th in pass efficiency defense (92.0 rating).
Vetter was named as the Player of the Week in the HCAC for the third time in his career and the first as a punter. Vetter setup each of DC’s first two scoring drives with his leg by pinning Manchester inside their own five each time. With the score tied at 0-0, Vetter boomed a 65-yard punt which led to a quick three and out by the Spartans and an ensuing 23-yard touchdown march by the Jackets. Vetter followed that up with a 33-yard kick to the Manchester three-yard line, setting up an eventual Yellow Jacket safety for a 9-0 DC lead.
For the afternoon, Vetter averaged 42.8 yards a kick over four punts and pinned the Spartans inside their own 20 on three occasions. Vetter has averaged 35.6 yards per punt this season and has place seven of his 18 attempts inside the opponents’ 20-yard line.
