Vetter, Tietje and Rego named HCAC Players of the Week

DEFIANCE, Ohio—After a Saturday that saw Defiance College Athletics go 4-0 in head-to-head competition, three Yellow Jackets have earned Heartland Conference Player of the Week honors, with gridders Hans Vetter and Chris Tietje, and Danielle Rego, a middle blocker for the Volleyball squad earning honors.

DC quarterback Hans Vetter (Toledo, Ohio/Springfield) paced the Yellow Jackets in their upset of host Anderson University on Oct. 8. Defiance won 32-7 with Vetter having a hand on every score. The freshman quarterback racked up 185 yards through the air on 14-of-22 passing and tossed four touchdowns. He threw scores of 23, eight, nine, and 32 yards on the afternoon. Vetter also rushed in a score for the Yellow Jackets from one-yard out and finished the game with 37 yards on 14 carries. He was responsible for 81 percent of the Yellow Jackets’ 274 total yards in the ballgame. Vetter has thrown for five touchdowns and rushed for two this season. Defiance has now won three straight games and is 3-2 overall and 1-0 in the HCAC.

Defiance linebacker Chris Tietje (Deshler, Ohio/Patrick Henry) was equally instrumental in the Yellow Jackets’ win at Anderson. The sophomore linebacker helped slow down the nation’s eighth ranked offense. Tietje racked up seven tackles, including one for a loss, but made his biggest impact by intercepting two passes on the afternoon. His first pick ended an Anderson threat at the end of the first half. His second interception, which came in the fourth quarter, set up a field goal opportunity for the Yellow Jackets. Defiance held Anderson to just 224 yards in the game and forced five turnovers. Anderson was averaging 528 yards per game coming into the contest. On the season, Tietje has recorded 23 tackles.

Volleyballer Danielle Rego (Toledo, Ohio/Owens C.C.) guided the Yellow Jackets in two conference wins this week. The junior middle blocker posted 19 kills in Defiance’s 3-1 win over Anderson on Oct. 4. She then added a season-high 26 kills in the Yellow Jackets’ 3-2 win over Hanover on Oct. 8. Rego averaged five kills per game in the two matches. She also collected 28 digs, six blocks, and two service aces on the week. Rego is averaging 2.26 kills on the season. Defiance is now 12-8 overall and undefeated in conference play at 2-0.

The Yellow Jacket Football squad takes on Hanover College in a homecoming match-up at Coressel Stadium on Saturday, while the Lady Jacket Volleyball team hosts Franklin on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m.
