Defiance Holds Down Rose-Hulman for Fourth-Straight Win

Defiance at Rose-Hulman Box Score

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - For the second time in as many weeks the Defiance College football team entered a hostile road environment and came away with a hard-fought victory. The Jackets managed their fourth-straight win with a 13-10 victory over Rose-Hulman on Saturday in the first-ever meeting between the two schools on the gridiron.

The big play came in the second quarter as Gary Allen answered a Rose-Hulman touchdown with a 90-yard return on the proceeding kickoff for seven points. The Allen touchdown reclaimed a three-point lead for Defiance at 10-7 and sent the Jackets to the half with momentum on their side.

The Engineers drew even with a field goal in the third quarter but the Jackets held strong and eventually set up Dan Brown for the game-winning, 36-yard, field goal for the 13-10 lead with 9:45 to play in the contest.

Defense was the story once again for the Purple & Gold as it limited Rose-Hulman to just 33 yards on the ground in 20 attempts and 270 total yards of offense. Keith Snyder led the charge with 9.5 total tackles including nine solo hits and Chris Tietje turned in seven solo tackles. Josh Staggs had two of his three tackles go for negative yardage, including a five-yard sack and Ray Martinez forced the lone turnover of the day with an interception.

Joey Higgins played well in his first collegiate start at the quarterback position for DC, completing 17-of-31 passes for 127 yards. The freshman spread the ball around, finding Luke Dillon for seven catches and 60 yards, Gary Allen for six catches and Ricky Calverley and Scooter Curtis for two touches each.

The offense relied heavily on the running game and piled up 124 yards on the ground in 40 attempts. The running game was effective, especially in the first half as the Jackets dominated the time of possession by a 21 to nine margin in the opening two quarters. Jason Gendron led all rushers with 61 yards on 11 carries while Curtis went for 44 yards on 14 plays.

Dan Brown and Allen made the difference on special teams as Brown connected on field goals from 22 and 36 yards and Allen scored the lone DC touchdown of the afternoon with his 90-yard return in the second quarter.

Defiance (4-1, 2-0 HCAC) will return home for its homecoming next Saturday, Oct. 14, against Anderson. Kickoff is slated for 1:30 pm.

Notes of Interest: Saturday's win moved Robert Taylor into sole possession of ninth place on DC’s all-time list with 15 career victories as a head coach. Taylor began the season in a three-way tie for 11th and has moved past Gilbert Smith (1933-35), Larry Schultz (1946-47), Victor Rowen (1951-53) and Emerald Wilson (1927-30) with four victories in 2006.
