Pair of DC Sophomores Garner All-HCAC Honors

GREENWOOD, Ind. The Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference recently announced its 2008 award winners for the baseball regular season. Defiance took home a pair of accolades, as second-year players Tim Pitro and Kirk Jesse were each named All-Heartland Conference.

Johnston Earns Regional All-Tournament Honors

ITHACA, N,Y. Justine Johnston has been named to 2008 NCAA Ithaca, N.Y. Regional All-Tournament team, after helping Defiance reach the Regional Final Four for the first time in school history.
The junior hurler went 2-2 with a 0.97 ERA in DC’s four games at the NCAA Regional Tournament held on the campus of Ithaca College. She threw her fifth shutout of the season in Defiance’s third-round matchup against No. 13 Ramapo, while tying the school-record for most wins in a season with 18.

DC's Tourney Run Ends in Regional Final Four

ITHACA, N.Y. Defiance’s offense was unable to get anything going in its 1-0 loss to Rochester on Saturday, May 10. The loss ends the Jackets’ tourney run, which led them to the NCAA Regional Final Four for the first time in school history.
Rochester snapped Justine Johnston’s scoreless inning streak at 12 with a run in the top of the sixth. Alicia Citro’s triple to right center scored Erin Clark to give Rochester a 1-0 lead.
Mallory Faling had DC’s lone hit of the game, as the Jackets struck out 13 times. Johnston falls to 18-8... (read more)

Jackets Shutout No. 13 Ramapo to Advance

ITHACA, N.Y. Justine Johnston pitched her fifth shutout of the season, helping Defiance claim a 1-0 victory over No. 13 Ramapo on Saturday, May 10 to advance to the next round of the NCAA Regional Tournament. The Jackets avenged a loss to the Roadrunners earlier this season, while earning their school-record second victory of the NCAA Regional Tournament.

Matuszak Shatters Own School Record

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. Trevor Matuszak shattered his own school record in the hammer throw and Brad Zarembski earned a third-place finish at Indiana University’s Billy Hayes Invitational on Friday, May 9.
Matuszak’s throw of 196-06.00 broke his own school record by over three feet on his way to a fourth-place finish, remaining undefeated against Div. III opponents in the event this season. The two-time HCAC Athlete of the Month award winner has the best throw in Div. III this season by over five feet, having thrown automatic qualifying marks on six throws this season...(read more)
