| GREENWOOD, Ind. The Heartland Conference announced on Tuesday morning that Anthony Pettaway had been named as the league’s top male performer during the month of January. The award is voted on by the Sports Information Directors of the nine conference institutions.
Pettaway helped keep the Yellow Jackets in the hunt for the regular season conference championship by averaging 19.3 points, 7.3 rebounds and one block per game, while shooting 62 percent from the field in DC’s four January victories.
The sophomore center’s January totals of 16.1 points and 6.4 rebounds are in line with his season averages of 16.6 points and 7.6 rebounds. Pettaway is currently the only player in the HCAC to rank among the top five in points and rebounds and is also among the league leaders in field goal percentage.
Pettaway is the third Defiance College athlete to be named HCAC Athlete of the Month since the award came into existence for the 2005-2006 athletic year, and joins teammate Nick Sales as the second male athlete from DC to be selected for the honor in the last two months. Sales was tabbed as the top male athlete in the HCAC for the month of December.
