Pettaway Named HCAC's Male Athlete of the Month

GREENWOOD, Ind. – Defiance College’s Anthony Pettaway has been selected as the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Male Athlete of the Month for December as voted on by the league’s sports information directors. Pettaway is a three-time recipient of the award after taking the honor in December and January of last season.

The pre-season All-American led the red-hot Defiance squad to a 6-1 record in the month of December, including three conference victories and a 53-46 win over No. 13 Wisconsin-Oshkosh. The strong play led to DC receiving votes in each of the past two D3hoops.com top-25 polls.

Pettaway posted four double-double performances in seven games and averaged 14.6 points and 10.1 rebounds per game for the month, while shooting at a 56.6-percent clip from the field. The six-foot, eight-inch center netted 13 or more points in all but one December contest and pulled down 11 or more rebounds in all but two.

Pettaway recorded four double-doubles in December.

Pettaway earned the HCAC Player-of-the-Week award on December 10 after averaging 14.5 points and 11.5 boards in a pair of HCAC road wins over Hanover and Bluffton. Pettaway was also named as the P&G Financial Tournament MVP after leading the Yellow Jackets to the championship.

The Toledo, Ohio, native is one of three Defiance male student athletes to be named HCAC Athlete of the month, and is the first to do so three times.

Pettaway and Defiance (9-4, 4-0 HCAC) will look to maintain their perch atop the conference standings when they play at Transylvania (7-4, 3-0 HCAC) on Saturday at 3:00 pm.
