Jackets Blow Past Thomas More in Season Opener

DEFIANCE, Ohio – The 32nd annual Purple and Gold Financial Classic opened in style on Friday night for the Yellow Jackets as Defiance rolled past Thomas More, 76-48, for a season-opening victory. The win marked DC’s fifth-straight victory at the Classic over the past three seasons.

Defiance never trailed on the night, as Anthony Jackson opened the scoring with a trey for the quick 3-0 lead. Thomas More’s Brad Buckner cut the lead to one with a turnaround bucket in the paint, but the Jackets rattled off seven unanswered points for a 10-2 lead and never looked back.

The lead stood at 43-26 at the break and swelled to as many as 28 on two occasions including the final tally of 76-48. Defiance held a double-digit advantage for the final 29:52 minutes after taking an 18-8 lead at the 10:08 mark of the first half.

poured in a game-high 18 points on six-of-10 shooting in only 25 minutes. Pettaway converted six-of-eight free throws and pulled down four rebounds.

Also cracking double figures for Defiance was freshman forward Nick Sales. The Barberton, Ohio, native turned in 11 points, five boards and a pair of blocks in 18 minutes.

Fellow freshmen Mike Floyd and Heath Armstrong also impressed in their collegiate debuts as Floyd had nine points, three rebounds and three helpers while Armstrong sank a pair of threes and ended with seven points.

C.J. Johnson filled out the stat sheet for six points, five rebounds and three steals and Bryan Post also had six points and three assists.

For the game 16 Yellow Jackets saw the court with all but three of them reaching the scoring column.

Defiance shot 47.2 percent from the floor and 36.4 from beyond the arc while using an entire team effort to dominate the Saints on the glass by the tune of 40-26.

Thomas More struggled all night long, shooting just 32.7 percent overall and three-of-21 from long distance while putting only one player in double figures. Eddie Tyree ended the night with 10 points to lead the Thomas More attack.

In the first game of the night, Anderson rallied from a first-half deficit to take an exciting 69-66 win over Wilmington College.

The Jackets will wrap up the Purple and Gold Classic on Saturday night when they take on Wilmington at 7:30 pm. Anderson will play Thomas More earlier in the afternoon, with the tip set for 1:00 pm.
