Neal Leads Yellow Jackets at ONU Tri-Match
Ohio Northern Tri-Match Results
LIMA, Ohio Freshman Jace Neal carded a 37 on the front nine and finished in a tie for fourth place with a single-round total of 78 on Wednesday at Colonial Golf Course. The Jackets battled the elements, playing through the rain en route to finishing just 14 shots back of the team title.
Despite the challenging playing conditions, DC assistant coach Dick Kaiser came away impressed with his team’s efforts. “I thought the freshmen fought through some adversity and kept plugging away. Jace Neal was only two strokes from medaling.” Kaiser then added, “Overall we are starting to settle in but we still have not put a complete team round together. If we can continue to improve and get all of our players in the 70’s, which they are capable of, we will be very competitive.”
The trio of freshmen golfers turned in DC’s top three individual scores as Neal’s 78 was followed by Aaron Konold’s 81 and Josh Calame’s 83. All three finished inside the top 15, with Neal’s fourth-place showing leading the way. Craig Holman narrowly missed a top-15 performance with his 85 and Cody Anderson shot a 90.
Heidelberg won the team title with a 313 after its top four all carded an 80 or lower and ended in the top ten in the individual standings. Ohio Northern’s Wes Immler and Andrew Rahrig shot a tournament-best 76, but the Polar Bears took second as a team with a 318.
ONU’s ‘B’ team finished one stroke back in third with a 319 and Defiance took fourth with its 327. Fifth place went to Heidelberg’s ‘B’ roster after it finished with a 359.
The Yellow Jackets will face a big test on Friday, when they play in a nine-team event at Tri-State.
