DEFIANCE, Ohio - The Defiance College men’s soccer team fell 5-1 to Bethany College in the final game of the 2007 Defiance Classic.
Bethany came out firing, scoring three goals in the first twenty minutes of the first half. Despite trailing by three goals early in the contest the Jackets continued to battle the Bisons. Senior Benji Hughes (Camden, Ohio/Preble Shawnee) chipped a pass over a Bison defender to Matthew Johnson (Monroe, Mich./Jefferson) who avoided a diving effort by Bethany goalkeeper Chad Perry to put a shot in the far corner of the net, narrowing the deficit to 3-1.
The deficit remained the same for the first thirty minutes of the second half, until Bethany scored two more late goals to hand DC a 5-1 defeat.
The loss drops the Jackets to 0-2 on the season. Defiance will return to action at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, September 8, when it faces the Hornets of Kalamazoo College.
