Men's Soccer Powers Past Taylor-Fort Wayne

Taylor-Fort Wayne at Defiance Box Score

DEFIANCE, Ohio – Defiance busted open a 1-0 game with four second-half goals and went on to take the 5-0 shutout victory over Taylor University-Ft. Wayne on Tuesday afternoon at Winsper-Knobel Field.

The win was the third in the last four games for DC and upped the Jackets to 4-3 on their home field in 2006.

The Jackets wasted little time taking control of the action on Tuesday and grabbed the 1-0 lead when Ryan Rothermel crashed the box and headed in a corner kick off the foot of Jared Gray at the 9:05 mark.

Defiance kept the pressure on and fired off 20 first-half shots, but a combination of near misses and several key saves from Ben Carowan kept the score at 1-0 heading to the half.

The near misses turned into scores in the second half and Defiance poured it on with four goals in the final 45 minutes to finish off the 5-0 win.

Steven Gallagher scored a pair of goals for the Jackets while Rothermel, Jeremy Evers and Alex Toll all found the back of the net for their first strikes of the year. Gray and Karl Eustache each had a pair of assists and Gregory Vogt and Evers each added one.

Brandon Morgan and Gordon Kay combined to post 90 minutes of shutout play between the pipes but were barely challenged as the DC defense held Taylor-Ft. Wayne to just one shot all game.

DC held a 33-1 advantage on shots, a 13-0 edge on shots on goal and an 8-0 advantage in corner kicks.

Defiance (4-9-0) will now play four straight road contests in the HCAC before returning to Winsper-Knobel Field to host Anderson in its final regular season contest on Oct. 28.
