GREENWOOD, Ind. Defiance College’s Austin Kleman has been named the HCAC Player of the Week in men’s tennis, as announced on Monday afternoon by the league office. Kleman was undefeated at No. 2 singles and doubles, leading the Jackets to wins over Goshen and Manchester on the week.
Kleman opened with a 6-3, 6-0 win in singles play and an 8-6 win at No. 2 doubles in DC’s 5-4 win at Goshen on Tuesday. He then posted 6-0, 4-6, 10-4 and 8-4 victories, as the Jackets bounced Manchester by a 7-2 margin on Thursday.
DC is now up to 3-3 in league play with the win over the Spartans and has won four of its last five matches, including three straight. Kleman has played a major role in that surge, as the freshman has notched five-straight victories at No. 2 singles, including wins against HCAC foes Manchester, Bluffton and MSJ. The standout freshman has posted a 9-5 record at No. 2 singles and is 3-1 in HCAC play.
Kleman and Defiance will play at Heidelberg on Monday at 4:00 pm, before hosting Transylvania and Anderson in a tri-match on Tuesday. The Jackets will play TU at noon and the Ravens at 4:00 pm in their final match of the regular season.
