Tri-State Spoils 2008 Home Opener for Men's Tennis

DEFIANCE, Ohio – Defiance College earned wins at the top two singles slots on Wednesday, but dropped the rest of the singles matches and was swept in doubles play by Tri-State. The Jackets suffered a 7-2 defeat to the Thunder in DC’s first home contest of the 2008 campaign.

Tri-State took the early 3-0 edge behind the doubles sweep. Tim Kurtz and Joe Caig provided the best doubles match of the afternoon, falling 8-5 at the top spot to TSU’s tandem of Brent Becker and Bryan Roth.

Kurtz rebounded with a 7-6 (7-5), 6-4 win over Becker at No. 1 singles to get Defiance in the win column, and Austin Kleman handled Nick Garstka 6-4, 7-5 at the No. 2 spot for DC’s second point of the match.

That would be all the Jackets would win however, as Tri-State scored straight-set wins at No. 3-6 singles to secure the 7-2 team victory over Defiance.

DC (3-7) will be back in action on Saturday when it plays Bluffton and Alma in a non-conference doubleheader.
