DC Softball ends Florida trip with two wins
FT. MYERS, Fla. -- The Defiance College Softball team ended their trip at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic with two wins against The College of Wooster and Wilmington College by the scores 2-1 and 6-3, respectively.
Against Wooster, the two teams were in a scoreless stalemate until Kelsey Sugg homered in the bottom of the fourth to give DC a 1-0 lead. Pitcher Brittany Sims was hurling a shutout until the top of the seventh, when Jacqueline Lucas of Wooster homered off of Sims to tie the game at 1-1. In the bottom of the seventh, Corrine D'Emilio reached on a walk, then advanced after Stephanie Lieto was hit by a pitch. D'Emilio would score the game-winning run off of a wild throw by Wooster's third baseman.
In the second game of the day against Wilmington, Jessica Smith scored the first run of the game in the top of the first on an RBI single by Sugg. Wilmington would answer in the bottom half of the inning with three runs of its own off of Alicia Allen, who was making her first start of the season. DC would chip away at the lead, scoring a run in the top of the third, then tying the game at three in the top of the fourth. In the top of the fifth, Renee Steffen would score the go-ahead run on a pinch-hit RBI single by Ashley Wickard. Cori Long and Smith would add two more insurance runs in the top of the sixth.
DC, now 7-3 on the year, play its first home game of the year against Albion College on Wednesday at 3:00 pm.
