Falling behind 3-0 after the top of the first, the Jackets answered back with two in the bottom half of the inning. In the next inning, DC took a one-run lead on Aarika Davis’s two-run shot over the left field fence for her third homer of the year.
In the third, the DC offense exploded for seven runs, with twelve batters coming to the plate in the inning. The rally was highlighted by a two-RBI double by Stephanie Lieto and a three-run triple by Jessica Smith. Going into the top of the fourth, DC held a dominating 11-3 lead and cruised to the win.
Justine Johnston held the Britons in check after giving up three runs on three hits in the first. From that point on, she allowed only two hits and one run the rest of the way.
The second game of the doubleheader saw more of a battle between the opposing pitchers rather than an offense showcase. The Jackets struck in the first, getting two runs in their opening sequence. Albion responded in the next half of the frame, getting one of those runs back to cut the two-run lead in half.
DC added an insurance run in each of the fifth and sixth innings on a sacrifice fly by Amanda Auzins and a based-loaded walk by Davis, respectively. Those runs proved to be inconsequential, as Albion never scored after the second inning.
Julie Miller started the game, dispering five hits over three innings. Kayla Crager came in the fourth, giving three solid innings of one-hit ball to earn the win, while Robin Diers picked up the save in the seventh. Smith and Kelsey Sugg each had two hits and an RBI in the game.
Defiance (6-6) will hit the road to take on Ohio Northern University Wednesday at 3:00 p.m.
