Softball Bounces Albion in Five Innings

DEFIANCE, Ohio – Defiance exploded for nine runs in its first trip to the plate on Thursday afternoon and rolled to a 9-1 win in the opener against Albion at Sal Hench Field. The second game was cancelled due to heavy rains in the area.

The Yellow Jackets jumped all over Albion in the bottom of the first inning, capitalizing on a trio of Briton fielding blunders to push nine runners across the plate. Justine Johnston’s two-run triple ignited the offensive explosion and lifted DC to the quick 3-0 lead.

The lead grew to 4-0 when Johnston scored on an error and an Amanda Auzins single to right field plated another run to make it 5-0 in favor of Defiance. Laurel Palk’s second hit of the inning scored Auzins and Cara Hughes, and a two-run homer off the bat of Mallory Faling capped the nine-run frame.

Albion struck back for a single run in the top of the second, but the 9-1 cushion would hold up, as Johnston picked up her third win in the circle by only allowing three hits and one run in five innings of work. Johnston also retired five batters on strikes before the game was called.

Johnston pitched all five innings and drove in two runs.

Palk led the offense with three hits, two runs and a pair of RBI, while Faling and Johnston each drove in a pair of runs.

The Yellow Jackets improve to 4-7 with the victory, while Albion drops to 8-5. Defiance will play at Heidelberg on April 2.
