Johnston's Shutout Helps DC Split with Anderson

Defiance at Anderson Game one / Game two

ANDERSON, Ind. – Justine Johnston shutout Anderson University in the opener, 1-0, but the Jackets were unable to complete the sweep as they fell 6-1 in the nightcap of the HCAC doubleheader on April 17. DC moves to 5-3 in the HCAC with the split, having its four-game winning streak snapped in the second game.

In the opener, Defiance scored its only run of the game in the top of the fourth. Elizabeth Petrie drew a bases loaded walk to plate Tasha Stucke in what turned out to be the game-winning run.

Johnston scattered seven hits over her seven innings of work and struck out five batters, while picking up her second shutout of the season. The junior improved to 9-5 with the win, having now earned victories in four of her last five starts.

Johnston's shutout gives her four wins in her last five starts.
The Ravens touched up starter Kelly Schnipke (4-4) early in the nightcap, scoring a run in the first two innings before a four-run burst in the fourth gave them a six-run lead. Michelle Schwab scored DC’s only run of the game in the fifth as Anderson starter Ellen Thompson limited the Jackets to just two hits over the course of the game.

Defiance (14-13) returns to action this Sunday, April 20, when it hosts Hanover College in a makeup game from the rainout on April 13. The opening game of the HCAC doubleheader will begin at 11:00 a.m.
