Sugg leads DC past Anderson

DEFIANCE, Ohio—The Defiance College Softball team blew past the Anderson University Ravens on Thursday afternoon at Hench Field.

Winning by scores of 5-1 and 9-1, the Jackets capitalized on great game one pitching from Alicia Allen, who went six innings and struck out two, and game two pitching by Robin Diers. Diers struck out two, while allowing just one earned run.

Kelsey Sugg headlined the DC offense, blasting a two-run homer in the first game and adding three RBI in a 3-for-4 game-two performance, also scoring a run. Allen and Kelly VanderHorst each went 2-for-4 in game two, while Renee Steffen scored a run in a 2-for-3 day at the plate.

Jessica Smith and Chris Moreo added game-one RBI, while DC took advantage of five AU errors on the day.

Defiance is off to an 8-0 start in the Heartland Conference and are 16-10 overall. The Jackets will host Mount St. Joseph in a double header on Saturday, with first pitch scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
