Four-Run Fourth Lifts DC Past Bluffton

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Defiance reached the 20-win plateau for the fifth consecutive season, scoring all four of its run in the fourth in its 4-1 victory over Bluffton University in the opening round of the HCAC Tournament on Friday, May 2.

Marah Robinson led off the fourth inning with a doubled to put a runner in scoring position with no outs. After advancing to third on a wild pitch, she scored on a single to left field by Mallory Faling to knot the game at 1 apiece. Stephanie Lieto gave DC its first lead of the game two batters later with a sac fly to left, scoring pinch runner Katie Bowman. Cara Hughes’ first homerun of her career made it a 4-1 game, hitting a two-run shot to center to extend the Jacket’s lead to three runs.

Justine Johnston (14-6) recorded the victory for Defiance, holding the Beaver’s HCAC-leading offense to just one run in seven innings. The junior hurler improved to 8-2 with a 1.09 ERA against HCAC opponents with her 20th complete game of the season.

DC tallied six hits in the game, led by Robinson who finished 2-for-3. Faling recorded her team-leading 26th RBI of the season, while Kayla Crager, Hughes and Tasha Stucke also recorded hits for the Jackets.

Defiance (20-16) will face the top seeded Engineers of Rose-Hulman in the second round of the HCAC Tournament.
