DEFIANCE, Ohio -- The Defiance College Yellow Jacket Softball team split its doubleheader against Denison College Sunday afternoon, winning the first game 2-0 and dropping the second 5-0.
In the opener, both teams could not get anything going offensively, as the first five and a half innings went by without a run. Yet in the bottom of the sixth, the Jackets were able to get a run home in the form of Jessica Smith, as Renee Steffen brought her around on an RBI double. Melanie Bushman would bring in Allison Ramsay, who pinch ran for Steffen, with an RBI single of her own.
Justine Johnston pitched seven innings of two-hit, shutout softball in the game, striking out four and walking one. Steffen went 1-for-3 in the game with an RBI. Bushman went 1-for-2 with an RBI.
In the second game, both teams were held scoreless for the first three innings. In the top of the fourth, Denison struck first on an RBI single by Ali Teopas. The Big Red would add another run in the inning on a misplay in the infield. In the top of the sixth, Dension tacked on three more runs, which would lead to the end of pitcher Brittany Sims’s day, as Justine Johnston came on in relief.
Bushman went 2-for-3 in the game, while Alicia Allen went 1-for-2. Teopas went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored for Denison.
DC, now 9-5 overall, hosts Adrian College Tuesday afternoon at 3:00 p.m.
