DC Softball gets second straight sweep

DEFIANCE, Ohio -- The Defiance College Softball team won its fifth game in a row and second doubleheader sweep with a pair of victories over Franklin College by the scores 9-8 and 7-1.
The first game saw a fair amount of action, as DC fought from behind for most of the game. The Jackets would basically match every run that the Grizzlies put on the board, as DC tied the score five times in the game. The key runs that put the game into extra innings came in the bottom of the seventh, when Kayla Crager blasted a two-out-two-run double to left center to tie the game at six. The Grizzlies scored a run in eighth and ninth innings, but the resilient Jackets matched each run in the bottom of the inning. After holding Franklin scoreless in the top of the tenth, Crager would once again play the role of the hero, scoring the winning run on a sacrifice fly by Jessica Smith.
Justine Johnston picked up her 12th win of the year, going all 10 innings. Smith went 2-for-5 in the game with two RBIs and a run scored.
In the second game, Franklin jumped on the scoreboard first, taking an early 1-0 lead. However, the Jackets wouldn’t be down for long, as they sent 11 batters to the plate and ended up with six runs in the inning. The five-run cushion proved to be all Alicia Allen would need, as she surrendered only three hits over the next six innings en route to her fourth win of the year.
Melanie Bushman went 2-for-3 with three RBIs and a run scored. Crager went 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored.
Defiance College, now 21-11 (6-2 HCAC), hosts Adrian College Sunday at 11:00 a.m.
